What's New For the 2019 Toyota 86?

Since 2012, the 86 has functioned as Toyota's two-door fastback coupe offering. It was a sole model until 2018, when Toyota introduced the GT as a second, higher-level trim. And now, in 2019, the 86 has three trims, the new entry being the TRD Special Edition.

As a two-door vehicle, the 2019 Toyota 86 can accommodate up to four people, with 76.5 cubic feet of passenger volume and 6.9 cubic feet of cargo volume. Because of its racing orientation, the vehicle at the base-trim level has sport front bucket seats with black shoulder pads and knee support cushions, and its standard comfort and convenience features include a multi-information display, remote keyless entry, Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, an auto-dimming rearview mirror for dimming headlight glare from behind you, eight-speaker audio, an AM/FM radio tuner, voice recognition, HD Radio, a USB data port and an auxiliary audio jack for playing media from your portable media devices, and a 7-inch touchscreen. Front-seat heating capability, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a smart key system with push-button engine start (instead of just remote keyless entry) appear on the GT and the TRD Special Edition. The TRD trim further stands apart with the red-and-black seat finish on the seats and steering wheel, red contrast stitching on the steering wheel and gearshift boot, and a stitched "TRD" logo embroidered on the passenger side.

Horsepower

2019 Toyota 86 Exterior FrontPowering the 2019 Toyota 86 is a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine. If paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, the engine produces 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. If the engine is hitched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, it produces 5 less horsepower and torque. However, the automatic gearbox optimizes the vehicle's fuel economy: at 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. On the base-level and GT trims, you have the choice between both transmission types, while the TRD Special Edition is only available with the automatic gearbox. With the engine placed in the front, the Toyota 86 uses a rear-wheel drivetrain to maximize driving performance by more evenly distributing its weight from front to back.

Safety

2019 Toyota 86 Exterior RearFor restraint and cushioning in the event of a crash, the 2019 Toyota 86 is equipped with a pair of front impact airbags, a pair of front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and a pair of roof-mounted side curtain airbags. Also present on the 86 is the Star Safety System, which provides electronic vehicle stability control, traction control, an anti-lock braking system on the four-wheel disc brakes, brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution, and smart stop technology. Other standard safety features on the Toyota 86 include a rearview camera, a theft-deterrent system, and daytime running lights. On the GT and TRD Special Edition, engine immobilization and a panic alarm are added to boost the theft-deterrent system.
