Car Not Accelerating

Ā

Most cars have a lot of horsepowers and can pick up speed easily as you spend time driving. There may come a time when you notice the engine starts to feel sluggish and has difficulty accelerating. This issue is common and can be caused by a few main issues. If you want to determine why your car won't accelerate, it's important to be aware of what may be causing the problem.

1. Dirty Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) or Oxygen Sensor

Two of the main sensors under the hood can become dirty, preventing the car from accelerating. The oxygen sensor and the mass airflow can malfunction and prevent the vehicle from being monitored as it's in use. You may even notice your fuel mileage is affected. Fortunately, it's easy for a mechanic to clean the mass airflow sensor. If the problem is with the oxygen sensor, then the part needs to be replaced to restore your car's ability to pick up speed.

2. Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

The Throttle Position Sensor is responsible for telling the computer in your car's engine how it needs to adjust. If it can't be read accurately, it won't allow the correct information to be received, making the car have difficulty accelerating.

3. Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is a part that has to be replaced at specific intervals throughout the year because it accumulates a lot of grime as it traps debris and dirt. This prevents contaminants from entering the engine to ensure the car operates well. Read your owner's manual to determine how often the filter needs to be swapped out to ensure the car gets enough fuel. If your vehicle doesn't accelerate easily, replacing the filter can correct the issue.

4. Dirty Air Filters

Your air filters can prevent the car from accelerating if they accumulate too much dirt and grime. This will prevent the car from picking up speed if the engine isn't getting enough airflow to operate well. A professional can also inspect the part to determine if it's reached the end of its lifespan.
