Car odors can mean many different things, depending on the smell. If you can't diagnose a problem with your car on your own, you can get an idea of what might be wrong by learning to identify what certain scents mean.

Burned Rubber

The smell of burning rubber may indicate that your car's brakes need some attention. The brakes will start to produce a burning smell when the brake pads, which protect the metal parts from hitting against each other, begin to wear thin. A smell of burning rubber can also mean that your car is leaking oil. Oil leaking onto the hot exhaust pipe when the car is turned on causes the burned rubber smell.

Gym Clothes

The smell of gym clothes can signal that it's time to air out the air conditioning system. This smell arises when mold and mildew start to form in the air conditioning evaporator. You can try airing out the system by turning on the fan without the A/C on. This will likely dry out the a/c unit and eliminate the smell.

Burned Carpet

A burned carpet smell can also come from the brakes. Sometimes, your car's brake pads can also produce a burned carpet smell if the brake pads are overheated. This smell can also be caused by braking too hard, such as going down a steep hill. The burning carpet smell might also appear if you drive with the car's hand brake on.

Syrup

The smell of sweet syrup can indicate that there is ethylene glycol leaking somewhere. This fluid can start leaking from a variety of places, including the radiator or a failed intake manifold gasket. The smell might be most pronounced when the engine is running or shortly after you've turned off the car.

Sulfur or Rotten Eggs

This rotten smell can indicate an issue with the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter may be failing to process hydrogen sulfide correctly in the exhaust system, causing the foul smell and can signal impending mechanical trouble.
