In the past, the Toyota 4Runner has won the hearts of adventurous consumers with its durability and exceptional off-road capabilities. For the latest model year, the 4Runner keeps its classic off-road performance while adding more in the way of creature comforts, safety technology, and amenities. Now, the 4Runner comes equipped at all trim levels with more safety technologies than before.
Each trim gets the Toyota Safety Sense P package of driver aids, which range from external safety tools like high-beam assist to lane departure warning and pedestrian alert. The 4Runner also gets an updated infotainment system this year, which comes in the form of an eight-inch display screen with Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and Apple CarPlay. The 4Runner still has plenty of room for seven occupants plus plenty of extra space for cargo and luggage.
The spacious trunk also includes clever cargo compartments and a sliding floor to maximize space without sacrificing the passenger room. Versatility remains a highlight of the latest 4Runner, as evidenced by the fact that there are many add-on options and configurations available to customize your ride.
The base 2020 Toyota 4Runner is called the SR5. Toyota generously equips the SR5 with some of the most advanced safety technology on the market. Furthermore, the SR5 comes standard with an eight-inch display screen that is compatible with Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and Apple CarPlay. The base trim has pleasant acoustics and a decent sound system. The SR5 Premium gives you the option of a part-time four-wheel drive.
It also comes with upgraded seating fabric, heated seats, and power-adjustable front seats. The driver also benefits from a standard backup camera with projected path gridlines. This trim gets a smart-key entry, and push-button start for convenience. The headlights are bold projector-style lights for visibility and aesthetics. The next trim is the TRD Off-Road. It gets custom trim-specific badges, a rear differential that locks, silver-accented color-keyed bumpers, and an infotainment system with navigation.
The TRD Off-Road Premium has custom exterior badges and red lettering on the front-seat headrests. The Venture Special Edition features dark gray wheels, a roof basket, black-accented bumpers, a black spoiler in the rear, and an eight-speaker sound system. The Limited rides on larger 20-inch wheels. It also gets a standard moonroof. The Nightshade Edition features blacked-out exterior accents and a JBL sound system. The TRD Pro gets performance-oriented LED lights and trim-specific details inside and out.
All trims of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner have the same engine, which is a 4.0L with six cylinders. This engine's power capacity, which is 270 HP and up to 278 LB-FT of torque, easily gets you to and from one place to the next. The engine can also tow a hefty 5,000 pounds. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but you can also upgrade to part-time or full-time all-wheel drive for optimal performance.
This year, the 4Runner is equipped with more safety technology than before. This includes the Toyota Safety Sense P package of driver-assist amenities, including forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and high-beam assist. Additional safety amenities vary by trim.
