Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy
Engineered through a partnership involving Toyota’s Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this gorgeous model pairs solar panels with beautiful styling. Beyond its artistic nature, the display directly gathers power. Protecting varied green energy networks is vital to maintaining our modern standard of living as old fossil fuel reserves dry up.
Built at a 1/6th scale model, this carbon-neutral, standalone installation is composed of 11 triangular pillars. Thanks to lenticular optics, the designers were able to hide the solar arrays while fully preserving their collection efficiency. Simply put, the sculpture operates as a wonderful work of art and an active ecological breakthrough that yields clean energy.
The historical path of this unique concept is quite long. While the official request for the layout occurred in 2020, its baseline technology was built over a decade ago. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, a senior principal scientist in the Materials Research Department, detailed that TMC began working with nanotechnology dynamic color pigments 12 years earlier, with the intent of adapting them for solar fields.
Though financed by TMC, APPO championed the effort for North American consumers, handling budgets and pushing for retail usage. Today, this Vivid color-panel technology can be implemented on standard solar setups while retaining over 90% of the hardware's original energy efficiency.
Co-project leader Brian Woods is just as excited to watch this Vivid Solar technology become a reality. "When you evaluate the potential for both signs and corporate advertising, there is an exceptional ROI for this system," he points out, adding that this innovative hardware joins an eco-conscious power source with infinite marketing possibilities.
