For the 2026 model year, the Toyota Highlander comes with all-wheel drive (AWD) standard on every trim. This three-row SUV delivers a versatile driving experience, combining comfort for daily use with the capability to handle a variety of road conditions. The standard AWD system works together with a turbocharged engine and automatic transmission to provide reliable and confident performance.

All-Wheel Drive With Enhancements

The 2026 Highlander’s AWD system is designed to adapt to different road and weather conditions. Drivers can select from multiple modes to optimize performance: Normal Mode for everyday driving, Eco Mode to improve fuel efficiency, Sport Mode for a more dynamic driving experience, and Snow Mode for extra traction on slick surfaces. For more challenging terrain, the Multi-Terrain Select feature provides settings for Rock & Dirt and Mud & Sand. The vehicle also includes advanced technologies such as Vehicle Stability Control, Trailer Sway Control, and Dynamic Torque Vectoring to enhance grip and cornering stability.

Other Powertrain Highlights

The Highlander is powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with Direct Shift engineering, allowing smooth and precise gear changes. The SUV achieves an estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city, running on regular unleaded fuel. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The suspension setup includes an independent front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension for a stable and comfortable ride. The XSE trim features a sport-tuned suspension for sharper handling, while a trailing-wishbone design enhances overall chassis performance. An electronic parking brake adds convenience.
