Toyota is deeply committed to safeguarding the environment's health, reaching beyond the focus on electrifying its lineup. Improper disposal of automotive batteries poses significant environmental risks. Sadly, numerous batteries end up in landfills, exacerbating the pollution crisis. Moreover, these end-of-life batteries contain reusable materials that often go untapped. To address this, Toyota has forged a partnership with Cirba Solutions to expand its battery recycling network. With over 60 years of experience, Cirba Solutions specializes in collecting, transporting, and extracting critical elements from old batteries.
This collaboration between Toyota Motor North America and Cirba Solutions broadens the automaker’s recycling network for BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs. Cirba Solutions boasts an impressive 95% recovery rate for extracting critical elements, reducing costs for Toyota and advancing its closed-loop vision for battery recycling. Benefiting from a substantial grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, Cirba Solutions has upgraded its Lancaster, Ohio facility. Here, they'll extract battery-grade materials from end-of-life batteries, reintegrating them into the supply chain for future EV use.
