It’s almost that time of year! The Holiday Lights Festival is one of the biggest holiday celebrations and fundraising opportunities in Omaha. With over 40 blocks of glimmering lights and plenty to do and see, this year’s festival is bound to be the best yet.
The Holiday Lights Festival begins with a special Thanksgiving Lighting Ceremony led by Mayor Jean Stothert. Everyone is invited to head to the Gene Leahy Mall after their turkey dinners to see the lights illuminate for the first time. Afterwards, local restaurants and shops will open for a few hours for those who want to celebrate the start of the holiday season with some additional dining or shopping.
In addition to the many eateries and shops to peruse downtown, there are several winter exclusive activities to partake in throughout the season. In the mood for live holiday music? Sounds of the Season, a showcase event for local choral groups, begins on Nov. 26, 2016. Catch the beautiful melodies on select dates throughout the block. Another popular attraction is the ConAgra Foods Ice Skating Rink, which is located at 10th & Capitol Ave. Open to the public starting Dec. 9, 2016, admission is only $5 (includes skate rental).
If you’re planning on stopping by the Holiday Lights Festival, which ends Jan. 2, 2017, be sure to bring non-perishable food and household items for donation if you can. Once again, this year’s theme is “Shine the Light on Hunger,” and proceeds from the ongoing events go to the Food Bank of Heartland.
