The Los Angeles Auto Show is where many automakers reveal their ground-breaking concepts and up-and-coming models, but few of the vehicles on display were as stunning as the 2018 Toyota Coupe High-Rider (C-HR). Revealed last year as a Scion concept, the urban crossover is now debuting under the Toyota brand and ready for production.

Elevated Design Language

Toyota moves past its usual practical design principles, embracing a bold, avant-garde theme called “Distinctive Diamond.” According to the automaker's press release, the CH-R is designed to evoke the “luxury, attractiveness, sophistication and strength” of the gemstone.

The crossover also stands out among other vehicles of its kind with distinctive muscular curves, sharp angles and sculpted body lines. Showing off mesmerizing features like projector beam halogen headlights with LED daytimes, slender windows, a coupe roofline, unique 18-inch aluminum wheels and angular taillights, the CH-R is sure to make quite the first impression.

Driver-Oriented Interior

The CH-R’s cabin establishes new standards for comfort and convenience. One of the most noticeable aspects is the clean, modern design of the dashboard and center console, which is slightly oriented towards the driver for ease of use. The surfaces are designed with diamond-patterned, soft-touch materials, and a leather steering wheel is standard. The 7-inch display is the crown jewel of the center console, and offers amenities like HD radio, a USB port, Bluetooth and voice controls.

The newest Toyota crossover comes in two trims: XLE and XLE Premium. Starting on the entry-level XLE, the CH-R is equipped with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a backup camera, power fold and heated mirrors, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The XLE Premium adds even more features, such as a smart key feature with push button start, heated front seats and a power lumbar driver seat.

Athletic Performance

The CH-R is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder designed with Variable Valve Timing and Valvematic for smooth performance and maximized fuel efficiency. The four-cylinder produces 144 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque, and a specially designed continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. The transmission's available Sport mode feature boosts throttle responsiveness for more upbeat acceleration, giving the CH-R the edge car buyers crave.

A lot of work went into constructing the CH-R for top-of-the-line performance, and Toyota’s press release states that the crossover’s “driving personality incorporates the ingredients of a well-sorted sports car.” The CH-R is designed with a MacPherson strut front suspension with SACHS dampers and the automaker’s first-ever double wishbone suspension with SACHS shock absorbers with urethane upper supports. It also features Electronic Power Steering and Preload Differential, all of which contribute to the vehicle’s agility, responsive steering and incredible drivability.

The 2018 Toyota CH-R is expected to arrive at Village Pointe Toyota next spring. Stay tuned to our Toyota blog for the latest information on this highly anticipated new model!
