Meet the Models

The Toyota 4Runner is available in six models: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited & the newly returned TRD Pro. If you’re looking for full trail-readiness, the TRD Series models are the way to go.

SR5 & Limited models can be had with 2WD or 4WD, while the trail-ready TRD models only come with 4WD. 4WD models of the SR5 utilize a part-time system with a 2-speed transfer case, while all other 4WD models feature a full-time multi-mode 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case and locking center differential.

Structural Design & Powertrain Specs

Power and prowess are two of the 4Runner’s defining characteristics. Designed with a 4-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension, it’s evident that the SUV is built for expedition. All 4WD models feature 9.6 inches of ground clearance, as well as hill-start assist control. TRD models add an electronic-locking rear differential, a multi-terrain select system and crawl control.

TRD Pro is the pinnacle of off-road performance, donning high-performance Bilstein shocks with rear remote reservoirs, TRD-tuned front springs, Nitto Terra Grappler tires and a front skid plate.

A 4.0-liter V6 sits under the hood of each and every 4Runner model, producing a healthy 270-horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Paired to the V6 is a five-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift mode. The 4-Runner can tow up to 5,000 lbs., and a hitch receiver and wiring harness are included as standard equipment.

Exterior and Interior Features

The 4Runner’s rugged attitude is evident at every angle. There are no major changes from last year, but a few subtle tweaks add a dash of freshness. The TRD models receive new exterior and interior badging, and the TRD Pro becomes available in three new colors: Barcelona Red, Cement and Super White. Additionally, TRD models receive a faux carbon-fiber center console.

There’s a lot to love in the 4Runner’s cabin, from 47.2 cubic feet of cargo space to an available pull-out cargo deck to an optional third row of seating. Starting on the SR5 trim, drivers enjoy creature comforts like a windshield wiper de-icer, second row AC vents, heated exterior mirrors, rear privacy glass, a power lift gate and LED taillights. The SUV is also quite technologically advanced, with Bluetooth connectivity, an 8-speaker audio system, voice controls, a built-in USB port and a 6.1-inch touchscreen radio being included on the list of standard equipment.
