Toyota Tundra and its Towing Capacity

Toyota Tundra

Durability and Toughness!

The Toyota Tundra has earned its reputation for toughness and capability. What does that mean for you? How much can it tow and how well it does? Let's take a look.

The SR Double Cab edition is the basic Tundra. It comes with rear-wheel drive and an iForce 4.7-liter V8. This 310-horsepower unit generates 327 pound-feet of torque. The payload is rated at 1600 pounds for this 6.5-footbed. Tow ratings are 6,800 pounds. It comes equipped with a towing hitch receiver and a 4-/7-pin connector.

Trailer sway control is always standard. This system works with the driver to provide safer tandem travel. Just as the traction controls do for the truck, trailer sway control recognizes how well the trailer is following the truck's lead and tries to correct for gravity, speed, and other forces.

Uphill/downhill shift logic is standard with the automatic transmission. This special feature helps the truck as it handles a load going up or down an incline.

Heavy-Duty Truck

If you choose the 5.7-liter V8, you harness 401 pound-feet of torque and 381 horsepower. Toyota provides a full tow package with this engine choice. These Tundras have a heavy-duty alternator, supplemental engine oil cooler, 170-amp alternator, and heavy-duty battery in expectation of pulling a heavy trailer. To help you watch for problems, the combination meter provides all of the vital information in one place.

A larger rear axle helps provide stability and strength. The ring gear size increases from 9.5 inches to 10.5 inches. A TripleTech heavy-duty system includes 12-high-strength bolts that attach the trailer hitch to the frame.

The upgraded automatic transmission adds a tow-haul mode to help drivers harness low-rev torque. An integrated trailer brake controller helps the driver move the load safely.

This combination of upgrades allows the truck to bump tow ratings up to a remarkable 10,200 pounds. Maximum payload increases to 1,730. Toyota ratings adhere to SAE J2807 standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Helping you stay on the go, the large fuel tank can hold 26 gallons. You can even upgrade it to a 38-gallon tank if you wish.

Toyota Tundra Definitely Gets the Job Done

Whether you need a truck for work or play, the Tundra definitely gets the job done. It can handle a contractor's needs, hauling building supplies to worksites. It can pull a boat trailer or camper for your weekend getaway or vacation. Even if you don't utilize all of its power, you'll be glad it is built both tough and strong.
